Independence Day is not about fireworks – it is about the right to set them off. Independence Day is about liberty, the individual rights that were thoughtfully placed outside the government’s reach in the Constitution and Bill of Rights.
Self-government is hard work, it demands vigilance and wisdom. Yet living in the darkness of despotism and primal fear is much harder. Independence Day is a time to appreciate the burden of self-government, and pray for those who hope to one day experience it.
